Christmas is coming

In the vein of my last thought about humble, honest, helpful blogging, I've been starting to put together an Xlib tutorial for people trying to learn how to use it. I've been working on lesson 2 this week, which is farther than the beginner xlib tutorials I've seen on line are. That was actually what got me to start. I saw a link to a beginner's xlib tutorial that showed 3 things and that was it. Most likely the writer got as far as that and then knew everything he was looking to learn and went off using xlib as he wanted, abandoning his tutorial.

Anyway, that's what I've been thinking about. I'm going to try to set it up so that in January or so, I can have one lesson a week for several weeks. We'll see how that turns out. It's hard right now because I don't have properly working X on my home linux box. For some reason it's ignoring mouse movement, the third lesson will be about input so that will become important.

We last left Dana back in March, waiting out the winter.

The swirling snow outside her window was beautiful, but Dana found it depressing. Her world had shrunk to her mansion. She and her servants were cut off. And most of all, she could not go visit Richard. He was nothing like her step father's cousin that he had forced her to marry. He cared for her and held her when she was down. She had come to love him so much that she thought her heart would burst.

Not everything was perfect, however. She deeply missed Marchan and wondered how he was faring. If he had found family yet far away across the Bay of Chitay. He was in her thoughts daily.

Martug brought in some hot cocoa for her. 'M'Lady,' he said. 'You have been moping lately and I thought you would like something hot to drink.'

'Thank you, Martug,' she said. 'Where is Magra? I'm feeling like some girl talk.'

'I believe she is upstairs, spinning. Shall I call her.'

'No, I shall join her. I did learn to spin once, and should really take it up again, if I'm to make my own wedding dress.'

Dana wandered upstairs in search of the Magra. She knew which rooms Magra was likely to be in, but did not find her in any of them. In the upstairs hallway she heard a rustling and following it, found Magra in Dana's own bedroom.

'What are you doing here?' Dana asked. Magra was usually very embarrassed to be anywhere in Dana's room and would usually only enter when Dana insisted she help with something.

'Oh, M'Lady!' Magra exclaimed. 'I was hoping to surprise you for your birthday.'

Dana thought for a second and then realized that the next day was her birthday. 'You have a gift for me?' she was shocked.

'Oh yes, M'Lady.' Magra reached down on the other side of the bed and stretched a new wool comforter across the bed. 'I got some help from the Duke's serving ladies. We thought the comforter that was here before was too cold.'

'Why thank you, Magra. Come here, sit with me and talk a while. I want some feminine time with you.'

I'm afraid that's as far as I can go tonight. Don't ask me what they would have talked about. I usually avoid women when they're "girl talking".
